Why have my artwork framed at Pictures Plus?
- We have a friendly and very experienced staff who can advise you about framing choices that are appropriate for your artwork and budget
- We will not do anything without advising you first
I haven’t had anything framed before. Where do I start?
- Start by coming in and talking to one of our friendly, knowledgeable staff.
- With over 20 years, we are sure that we can help you to make your artwork look it’s best while working within your budget.
Why does custom picture framing cost so much?
- Custom framing can be very labor intensive
- We use only the highest quality materials in all our framing projects
- We work with you to come up with a choice that fits in with your budget
- Prices vary a great deal depending on the size and type of your artwork and also on how elaborate a framing job you want
Can you frame my artwork using a frame that I bring in to you?
- Absolutely. We often use customers’ frames and we can choose mats to suit and will cut them to custom fit your frame.
How long does it take to have something custom framed?
- Depends on materials needed
- Depends on what is involved in the framing.
-if it is an antique needlework, for example, naturally we would like to be able to take a bit more time and care than if it is a $20.00 art print.
- If you have a time line in mind, simply advise us when you come in and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Are there different types of glass available?
- Yes, type of glass you choose depends primarily on the type of artwork you have although where it will hang does have some bearing as well.
- Valuable artwork should be framed with a conservation glass as it blocks out 97% of harmful UV rays
- Can also be used on less valuable artwork if fading is a concern
- Plexi glass also available
- All come in clear and non-glare
What is dry-mounting and when should it be considered?
- Non-conservation, permanent process using a vacuum heat press to affix a piece of artwork to a board to prevent buckling and rippling.
- Recommended for art posters, photographs and other types of artwork that are not heat sensitive
- Not recommended for artwork that is irreplaceable or valuable - museum quality mounting and framing is recommended for these types of artwork
What is the purpose of matting?
- Matting serves a number of functions
- One function is protection for your artwork
-protects edges of artwork
-provides air space for artwork to breathe
-keeps glass away from artwork to prevent harmful condensation from forming
- Also has aesthetic functions
-the proper color and proportions of matting will complement your artwork
-gives your eye a visual “resting place”
What is the difference between acid free and regular mats?
- Pictures Plus recommends acid free mats for all your framing
- Acid free mats are made from 100% cotton or alpha cellulose fibres in core and backing- they will not fade or bleed onto your artwork
- Regular mats are made from wood pulp and their PH is chemically treated but over time they will revert back to their original acidity which causes burning and brown spots to appear on your artwork
- Their color will fade as well
- Always be sure to ask specifically for conservation matting if that is what you want because some mats are available in a white core that will not turn brown and have the same appearance as a conservation quality mat.
Can you frame 3 dimensional objects?
- Yes, we pride ourselves on our ability to frame anything
- Just bring your object in and we will work out a cost for you based on how elaborate a framing presentation you would like
- We are also able to frame these types of artwork to conservation standards
